So I was on with Al Kresta today and I was totally outed that:
1. I do not have a smartphone. (And I don’t really want one.)
2. I don’t have a device right now, either. (Thank you, Destructoboy.)
But yes, I am still an app-a-holic.
And because I am all about helping others to become Catholic app-a-holics too, here’s some lists and links of Catholic apps. I haven’t checked all of these out, mind you.
Here’s my article that ran in the OSV Newsweekly. It has a listing of all sorts of Catholic apps that I love. We talked about a few apps from this article:
- Catholic News Live – 99-cents, Android and iOS
- Confession– $1.99, Android and iOS
- RosaryPlusHD – $1.99, iOS
- iRosary– $2.99, iOS
- Divine Office – $19.99 – Android and iOS, free on web
- iBreviary– free, Android and iOS
- iMissal– $4.99, Android and iOS
I also mentioned these apps in our conversation:
- Mea Culpa – free, iOS
- Follow Along with the Mass – $1.99, Android
Callers came in and had quite a great listing. Here’s what I gathered (if I missed any, let me know and I’ll add them!):
- Fighter Verses – Android and iOS
- Laudate – free, Android and iOS
- Pocket Catholic – free, Android
- iPieta– $2.99, iOS; $1 a module (4 modules) on Android
- Phonto – free, iOS
- YouVersion – free, Android and iOS
- Answers 4 Catholics (A4C) – $1.99, Android and iOS
- Rosary Guide – free, iOS
- Prayer Notebook Lite – free, iOS (I also recommend the paid version, which is $1.99 for iPhone and $2.99 for iPad)
And if you’re looking for great places to find apps, be sure to check out:
I’d love to hear YOUR favorite Catholic apps, so share away in the comments. 🙂
I am a big fan of the Divine Mercy App : http://thedivinemercy.org/app/
Oh yes! Good one! Their Mary app is good too…have you seen it?
Thanks to your heads-up on Google+, I listened last night on my home bound commute. It was a fun hour. I’m Evernote’ing this to look into soon.
Ah, Evernote. That was going to be an app I brought up if I had a second hour. 🙂
Is there a holy days app? I switched from my paper calendar which had all the holy days on it to the google/phone calendar. Now I’m having a hard time remember which days are which! Is there an app for that? 🙂
Oooo, Emily! I haven’t seen one. I’m going to do some checking…
Emily, I can’t find anything after a quick search. iMissal and Laudate both have that information included.
I add the holy days to my google calendar and put reminders there. It’s not perfect, but it puts it in my face in the way I need it to be.
So funny– My friend called me from the car, she was listening to the show – she mentioned this woman named, “Sarah” that was on talking about Apps, and I should call to promote mine (I love how my friends back me up!). However, with it still not on the market (NEXT WEEK YEAH!!), I felt weird, but the funny part is it never DAWNED on me “Sarah” was you!!! Does Al Kresta post as podcasts after they air??
Yes, they’re on as podcasts, Allison: I just need to dig up the links. I will try to do that today.
I found iBreviary a few years ago, and, it has the ordinary rite for having a service at a nursing home. Some of the other EMs who were at a different home, thought it too much to do, but, reading the Gospel and telling the story of the Saint of the Day seemed worth the effort to me. Or, from the app, but, I printed the readings and the saint information from USCCB website and from a Saint information website. Our Priest refers people to the USCCB website for readings. The iBreviary is convenient for an iPhone, and a week can be downloaded. I found that when I put “Catholic” into Pandora or iTunes, it can be strange: Better to search for a specific musician or comedian. I thought I would look through some of your other recommendations. Our bulletin is a pdf online which starts with an emailed link. There is a Mass times app, for travelers which is free.
Yes, the Mass times app is useful…though I have found it to be spotty.
And yes, searching for “Catholic” can get you a host of strange things, I agree! 🙂
Thanks for the reminder about iBreviary. 🙂
