I’m a fan of Mary Gardens. At least in theory.
When it comes to the details, though, I get a little fuzzy.
First, I have to figure out a budget for buying all those special plants. Then, I have to make the time to actually do it. And there’s sure to be more steps, and I’m sure to forget something.
It is with my own lazy streak firmly in place that I offer you these tips for a Mary Garden even I can handle.
I share my “secrets” over at Columbus Catholic Women this week.
I need to write you the southern version.
So, I’m commenting a bit late but wanted to say thanks for the Mary garden post…I’ve never heard of a “Mary garden”. Now I know why I’m always seeing statues of Mary in neighbors’ yards (new to this Catholic thing, remember). It gave me the incentive to get out in our yard with the kids and plant some flowers. We live in a “fixer upper” (you know how that goes) so I chose to ignore the bigger landscaping projects my hubby and I STILL need to get to and instead focus on bringing something beautiful for our family and guests to see at our front door. We planted petunias, I believe they’re called “Our Lady’s Praises”, because I’ve had them planted there in the past and I knew they’d do well. I let the kids pick out the colors, it costs about $30 with potting dirt included. Bonus that they need to be watered every morning so the kids now get up early, first one up gets to water the flowers! Nice to see them taking such an interest and pride in “their” Mary garden.
My hubby is Protestant and wouldn’t be real thrilled if I put a statue of Our Lady by the front door. I really wanted to dedicate the garden to Mary in some way, so I prayed to her about it. She gave me the idea to make the theme ladybugs instead. My inside nod to Mary, so every time I see “Our Lady’s Bugs” I will think of her. How clever of her, I wanted to post it here in case anyone else is in a similar situation. Still on the lookout for a ladybug piece to add to our garden. I’ve put in another prayer request to her to help me find the perfect piece, so I’m sure I’ll run across something soon!
Aww, Amy, how sweet. Someone over in the comments at the post suggesting Modge-Podging a picture of Mary to a rock, too, which might be less offensive to your husband. I love the ladybug idea, though. 🙂 Take some pictures, and if you don’t mind, I’ll post them and share them!
